channel 180613 Oxford Circus – Chinatown – Covent Garden – Bryon We sit across each other at the makeshift dinner table. He tells me that if I did have a huge mansion that was paid for by some high corporate job I never wanted, I would never want to leave the big empty mansion. He challenges me further, ‘What life would that be?’ Before I can even answer, he replies himself, ‘Life should be like camping. You may have a crappy place to sleep in, but everyday you want to get out of the tent because what you do out there is so much fun.’ It sounds like a very ideal philosophy to live by. For a moment I find myself imagining the possibilities of living in a forest, excited to get up and walk through the tall oak trees and smell fresh greenery. Then I realise I don’t like the lack of proper toilets in nature, and I might have to dig holes in the ground. channel 230613 My phone vibrates and a number of messages come in. One from him saying she’s not the one. Someone else shaves her head and another feels betrayed. I feel like this is a new era for all of us, and I don’t really miss where I came from. I put down my phone and head out. We walk through a forest where the Finnish soldiers fought the winter war against Russia. Outi gives us brief directions on how to get here from her house. On our walk, we saw a naked man sunbathing and an old woman laughed at me as I held Jun’s hair like a leash. We finally find our way back to Outi’s where she has bought us butter buns. According to her, it is a Finnish home tradition. She warms them up in her oven and serves it to us at a perfect temperature, just warm enough to blanket your taste buds, but not hot enough to scald your tongue. For a moment there is a serene quietness and ease. I miss home.
