Every year, the National Arts Council organises the
Singapore Writers Festival with the primary intention
of uniting the literary talents found around the globe.
This festival has garnered much reputation in Asia and
attracts quality works of literature. Consequently, due
to Singapore’s multi-racial community, works from all
four of the country’s official languages, English, Chinese,
Malay and Tamil, were collated and put up on display.
This unique feature made the festival special. The festival lasted for 10 days, from 1st November 2013 till 10th
November 2013.
The audience and the general public supported
our young society members who volunteered to put up
these displays in the interest of sustaining and developing the use of the Tamil Language in Singapore. This
grand gesture served as an encouragement for the Society in its efforts to promote the appreciation and awareness of the Tamil Language. NUS TLS would like to extend its sincere gratitude to the National Arts Council
for giving us the opportunity to be part of this worthy
cause.
National University of Singapore Tamil Language Society (NUS TLS) contributed to the festival as a
“Friend of the Festival”. NUS TLS staged a short dramatized recital of a short story from a collection of short
stories and poems written by G Sarangapani and other
writers. This was in conjunction with the launch of the
chap book titled “G Sarangapany’s Literary Legacy”.
G Sarangapani was a Tamil writer and publisher who
founded Singapore’s only daily Tamil newspaper, Tamil
Murasu. He was also a champion of the Tamil Language
in Singapore, having played a great role in the inclusion
of Tamil as one of the official languages of Singapore.
Five members from the Society participated in
this event. Mr. Raja Aravindh Raj, was the Master of
Ceremony for the events on that day. The short story
written by N Govindasamy, “Kaanal Neer”, was beautifully acted out by Mr. Rias Abdul Rahim and Ms. Aruna
Anantha Sayanam for the benefit of the audience while
the story was narrated by Mr. M Ganeshkumar and
Mr. M Prakash. Furthermore, Ms. Aruna also recited
a poem entitled “Aethu Viduthalai” written by I Ulaganathan. The President of NUS TLS Irshath Mohamed
curated an exhibition on ‘Thamizhavel’ G Sarangapani.
The exhibition consisted of his biography and his contributions to the society such as his advocacy for a united
Indian community. Viewers of the exhibition supported
this feature which educated them of the successes of G
Sarangapani.
