Tamilspeak: Embedding Spoken Tamil in the Education

Tamil is one of four official languages in Singapore,
and has had institutional support along with the other
designated mother tongue languages, Malay and
Mandarin. These languages, although referred to as
‘mother tongue’, are taught in schools as second languages
whilst English remains the first language or language of
instruction. Therefore, the school domain can be seen
as a critical platform where students engage in language
learning. Tamil language, as a minority language in the
Singaporean context, will take root as a living language
only if it is widely spoken, especially by the younger
generation, across domains whenever an opportunity
arises. This has to be a conscious effort by young Tamil
speakers- amidst the prevalence of English- to maintain
the Tamil language in Singapore. As such, the spoken
variety of Tamil, one which students are familiar with,
has to be encouraged and taught in schools. Whilst the
teaching of formal Tamil or the written form of Tamil
remains an important part of the school syllabus across
levels, the spoken variety should not be marginalised. In
essence, a language lives only if it is constantly spoken by
its speakers. Considering the multilingual backdrop of
Singapore and more importantly, the position of English, I
believe that the survivability of the Tamil language in part
depends on how it is propagated through the education
system.
