Mass media is purported to exert an inordinate influence
on the identity of the average youth worldwide. The Tamil
community is no exception, exemplified in Singapore by the
effects of mainstream Kollywood and local Tamil productions.
This paper seeks to question the potency of mass
media as a reference point for the Tamil identity, both
cultural and linguistic. A comparative analysis; youthful
media contrasted against age-old icons of Tamil cultural
heritage, would shed light on the identity markers adopted by
Singapore Tamil Youth [STY] today.
A social psychology approach is commissioned for
this objective comparison, with STY identity operationalized
as self-image how people view themselves. Self-image will be
measured through established implicit and explicit cognitive
methodologies: the Implicit Association Test [IAT] and the
Twenty-Statements Test [TST] respectively.
The IAT is a computerized categorization task that
measures the strength of automated cognitive associations
between distinct concepts. Participants will sort trigger words
like “Thiruvalluvar” or “Dhanush” between the categories
of “Heritage” and “Media” under time pressure conditions,
through single-key responses on a keyboard. Participant
reaction time is operationalized as an IAT Score, essentially
used to determine differences between Heritage and
Media in constituting self-image.

The TST is an explicit measure of selfimage, targeted primarily at peoples’ social roles.
Participants will list 20 reasons why they think
they are Tamil, beginning with “I am Tamil
because”. Content Analysis is applied to
participant responses; through sorting data
into predetermined categories of Heritage and
Media, TST Scores will be tabulated.
It is hypothesized that Cultural Heritage is a
greater contributor towards STY identity as compared
to Mass Media, both subconsciously and consciously.
Historical and systemic factors may account for this
prediction and will be used to explain why STY
identity is construed as such. The organic symbols of
heritage, when juxtaposed against fluid media icons,
facilitate discussions that hold value for the continued
survival of the Tamil language.
