For a language to proudly sustain itself, it is essential that it adapts and
renews itself according to the lifestyle of each era. Singapore’s Tamil
language too has undergone such changes and is beginning to shine as a
youthful and vibrant language.
Our young generation has been the pillar of strength in achieving
this high stature for our mother tongue. It is the youth who understand the
intricacies of each time period and incorporate them into aspects such as
language, culture and society.
Especially by exhibiting such modernisations in our local Tamil
arts scene, youth have been instrumental in keeping the Tamil language
young and accessible to all.
Today, we see Tamil being served as a delicious feast to the youth
who attend cultural concerts such as ‘Sangae Muzhangu’ and ‘Uthraa’ which
are organised and staged by youngsters themselves. We see several drama
groups formed with the support of youth, proudly contributing to the
growth of Tamil theatre, one of the three major forms of Tamil language.
However, we also hear opinions that youth are causing the
degradation of Tamil language by speaking with a mixture of English.
Actual fact is, in today’s world where English has gained much dominance
and in today’s Singapore where the four major races live in harmony,
speaking Tamil with a mixture of English seems to be inevitable. Not
everyone can have a good command of both languages. As English seems to
have taken relatively higher precedence, the Tamil language naturally faces

Nevertheless, the passion for Tamil language still remains strong
amongst youth. In Singapore where arts have specially been allocated
a set of resources, youth are aware that the arts scene is the most suitable
platform for them to show their passion for the language. The numerous
Tamil events organised by youth themselves stand testament to this fact.
Such events organised by youth are the ones which play a vital
role in ensuring that Tamil continues to be a youthful language. Reason
being – youth have immense talent in using technology to give form to
creative ideas. They have proven that it is possible to incorporate Tamil
language into new art forms such as rap, short-film and stand-up
comedy. They have enhanced Tamil stage dramas using their
expertise of lighting and sound. They are the ones who have also
organised a youth conference for Tamil language.
Through such ways, they have paved the way for Tamil
to be close to the hearts of other youth alike. This has thus been the
successful reason for the youthfulness of Tamil language.
On the whole, in Singapore where we have a vibrant arts and
cultural scene, the protection of the youthful Tamil language has been in the
hands of youth in the past and now, and we can expect this responsibility to
carry on in the future as well.
