The Tamil language is one which has been acknowledged
as the language spoken by the famous ‘Thiruvalluvar’ and
written by ‘Umar Pulavar’. This language in Singapore’s
context serves to unite the youth of various religions, in
particular, the Tamil youth of Singapore. The title of my
research paper is “Pachai, Vellai, Sivapu Singai Tamilan da!”
The three colours specified in the title describe the three
main sub-communities in the Indian community. The green
colour represents the Muslims of Singapore. The white
colour represents the Christians of Singapore. The red colour
represents the Hindus of Singapore. Other than uniting the
youth, Tamil language also serves the purpose of fostering
religious cohesiveness amongst the above mentioned.
One might then ask how is it plausible if one claims that
Tamil language helps in enhancing religious identity and
enhancing unity amongst the various religious
groups, whom the same group of Singapore Tamil
youth hesitate to speak in Tamil. This is the sort
of question that my research paper aims to
answer.
