In the world today, man’s achievements are very prevalent.
Technology is one of them. It is a well-known fact that Mr.
Timothy Berners Lee founded the Internet. However, many of us
use the Internet to type in Tamil without being aware that Mr. N
Govindasamy was the one who enabled this feature. I would like to
thank those who made Tamil possible, over the internet as if it were
not for these people, Tamil language would not be prevalent in the
Internet today.
It is undeniable that youth today are determined to
achieve something in their lives. However, is it of any good if our
future generations of leaders remain engrossed with technology all
the time? Both sides present strong arguments. Although there are
strong arguments presented by both sides, do you think youth will
type in Tamil when typing in English is easier? What is the benefit
that arises by doing so? Is Tamil only prevalent in the world of
Information Technology (IT), in the form of typing? These are the
questions that embodies and set the foundations to my research.
Next, a very important discovery of technology would
be social media. These platforms were introduced to facilitate
discussions over various issues and opinions voiced out by others.
Facebook is currently the most popular social platform on the
Internet. I have a reason for using the word ‘Facebook’ instead
of ‘Muga Nool’, the direct translation of Facebook in Tamil. It is
generally known that ‘FaceBook’ is the identity of a company. The
name of the social media website,’ YouTube’, cannot be split into
‘You’ and ‘Tube’. Likewise, it is wrong for Westerners to address
‘Thiruvalluvar’ as ‘Mr. Poet’.
The only platform where these differing opinions can
be explicitly seen would be through social media. Youth today
use Tamil in social media in various ways. For example, dance,
song, public speaking, presentations and advertisements
are ways in which opinions are shared over the Internet
through social media.

சிந்திப்பதில் பயிற்சி பெற்றிருக்கின்றனர் என்று கூறுவதில்
தவறில்லை.

them. He requires the songs he writes to be “clean”
and they possess messages that it is wrong for youth
to misbehave under the influence of alcohol and
drugs. Many might cite examples of other songs
to oppose his viewpoint. However, as long as
social media exists, it will help to deliver opposing
viewpoints towards inappropriate scenes and lyrics.
The level of initiative shown by youth through
dance, song and speech is not shown in the
written form of opinions. This research paper will
be based on this notion and on the ways in which
youth use the social media in their mother tongue,
which is Tamil, in discussions.
