Singapore which was once a third world country, is now
praised as one of the leading first world countries due to its
foresight and efficient use of human resources. One of the
most important reasons for this is its outstanding governance
and policies. In 1959, when the People’s Action Party
(PAP) came to power, Tamil language was established and
recognised as one of the four official languages of Singapore.
This research paper will be analysing the influence
and the usefulness of Tamil language in the political scene
from the past to present in various perspectives. This paper
will focus on the use of Tamil literature and the language in
Singapore’s parliament and the importance of Tamil language
in elections. The research method adopted for this section
would be live interviews. This research aims to elaborate on
the influence of the nation’s language policy on the Tamil
language and the significant political role played by the Tamil
speaking community in the development of our
nation. The data for these statements have been
gathered from the Internet and live interviews
obtained from the general public. The second
stage of information gathering for this paper
has been done by referring to academic
sources and other research papers through
literature review.

In today’s Singapore, it is crucial
for Tamil speaking youth to take up
reputable positions in the political
scene in order to sustain Tamil as
one of the youthful and vibrant
languages. I strongly believe
that Tamil youth in Singapore’s
political scene would be able
to shape policies in a way to
encourage a deeper understanding of
the significance of Tamil to a common
citizen.
