It is my contention that performance plays an integral role in
shaping the society and civic life of any community. Being an
enthusiast in the Tamil arts and culture scene in Singapore, I
was intrigued to embark on a Culturo-Geographical study
on how performance acts as a carrier of the Tamil culture for
Singaporean Tamil-speaking youth. To do this, two forms of
performances were chosen; Bharatanatyam as well as Tamil
theatre. The aim of this paper was to explore the dialectical
relationship between performance and Tamil culture and
how this plays out amidst the Tamil speaking youth in a
multicultural landscape like Singapore.
As an academic paper grounded in Cultural
Geography, it seeks to be the first of its kind presented in
a Tamil language conference as it establishes concepts like
performativity, diaspora and culture via a spatial and
temporal study and analysis of the practice of
these two performance types in Singapore. As
a pioneering paper in the Geographical study
of the Tamil culture in Singapore, it will aid
future research in this area by laying a strong
factual foundation of the performance of
Bharatanatyam and Tamil theatre by the youth
in Singapore.

As an insider researcher, the research
method that was employed in this study
was also unique as it allowed me to
access the pioneers and renowned
practitioners of the art forms in
Singapore as well as draw experiences
from my own personal views
after intentionally involving
myself in a performance for
the purpose of this research.
The results of the study prove
that the youth population of the
Tamil-speaking diaspora in Singapore,
retain core aspects of their culture in
the way they perform it but also make a
conscious effort to adopt best practices
from other cultures in Singapore
and in going so recognise a greater
multicultural as well as Singaporean
identity.
