to impart the knowledge about how youth can speak
and interact. NUS TLS will be bringing together many
youth through this conference. Coming from various
backgrounds, the youth attending this conference
would be able to understand and appreciate how they
parents. Also, these paper emphasises that Tamil
Language should not only be taken in the literary
sense. These research papers will also present on the
differences between the speaking and written forms of
Tamil, and how these difference affect Tamil speaking
youth.
There are many youth who either participate
or enjoy watching performances. There has been a
sudden surge in performing arts shows such as Tamil
theatre in recent times. The two research papers with
the theme of ‘Arts and Tamil’ aim to show the dialectal
relationship between Tamil culture and Tamil related
performing arts.
If a language is to sustain as a living language,
it should morph itself accordingly in order to adapt to
modern time and space. Hence, if the Tamil Language
is to sustain as a living language, it should change
accordingly to this era with the help of many different
types of media tools. To further discuss this notion,
two research papers will be presented on ‘Media and
Tamil’.
Finally, research papers on ‘Spaces and Tamil’.
One paper would be based on how Tamil Language is
seen as the unifying tool between the various religions of
the Tamil speaking community in Singapore. Another
paper would be on how the Urban Redevelopment
Plan affects the way Tamil is being used and it would
also present the findings about whether there are any
differences in the way Tamil is being spoken between
those living in HDB flats and those living in landed
properties.
Furthermore, this conference will be able

language and motivate
youth to continue engaging
in, and enhancing the use
of, Tamil

and abilities.
STYC 2014 will help Tamil speaking youth
to incorporate the habit of speaking Tamil into their
daily lives. It also serves as a platform for non-Tamil
speaking youth to know more about the Tamil language.
Through this conference, NUS TLS is able to ensure
that the Tamil-speaking community in Singapore is
able to appreciate the language and continue to strive
through the preservation of the language.
