two Sergeys were planning a major opera trilogy: Anna Karenina, The Seagull and
Doctor Zhivago. Agreement with the Bolshoi Theatre was reached and they started
working.
A very rare and fatal decease took him away at the peak of his creative form
and it’s senseless to speculate now what Sergey Kuryokhin could have achieved had
he not died of heart sarcoma on the 9th of July 1996. To the last day he remained a
fearless and bold provocateur. In his carefully built structures in music, theatre, film,
media and even politics first and foremost he relished the beauty and the shocking
newness of the idea.
Memory of Sergey Kuryokhin lives on: in the SKIF festival with its Electric
Mechanics and Ethnic Mechanics branches and in the Sergey Kuryokhin Foundation.
Now we have Sergey Kuryokhin’s Award. This should be an award for artistic
dare and bravery, for iconoclasm and revolutionary spirit, for the generous wealth
of ideas and elegant grace of their implementation.
