Practice Hygge and You`ll Never Get Cold
touching an object made of steel, glass, or
plastic. All this is called “hygge”, pronounced
“hoo-ga”. In a few words, it is a Danish
philosophy that can be translated as
“coziness”. Indeed it is so much more than
that. It's a way of life that encourages one to
be kinder to people, to take pleasure in the
modest, mundane, and familiar. It is a
celebration of the everyday moments, of
sensual experiences rather than things. It's an
entire life attitude in a positive manner.
While being there, Helen slows down
her pace of life and makes her cherished
dreams come true. She adopts everyday
Danish habits and communicates a lot with
the locals to understand their traditions
better. So, it helps her to deeply observe
different aspects of the Danish lifestyle from
childcare, education, food and interior design
to taxes, hobbies, and family relations. Every
chapter is entitled the name of a particular
month and contains an informative and
interesting description of Helen`s discoveries.
Following her notes, I realized that happiness is
hidden in simple things all around us. For
example, if you need to wind down in a mindful
manner, the Danes advise creating a kit that
contains comfort things like candles, quality
chocolate, herbal tea, a soft blanket, warm
wool socks, a photo album, a notebook, and a
pen. But cookies, cake, and pastries made in a
company of friends and family members will
definitely make you closer and bring a smile on
your face. They usually plan for hygge times
and reminisce about them afterwards.
When reading these pieces of advice, I
couldn`t but try to practice them myself. I
remember those snowy days booming with a
cold wind when the outside temperature was
about -30 C when I started painting cute white
bears wearing scarfs and yellow felt boots
with watercolor. Also, I rearranged my space
by adding more creative stuff to it and
googled for some tasty desserts recipes to
cook with my mom. Then I couldn`t resist the
temptation to hit the shops for some more

Scandinavian patterns to put on in frosty
winter days. I have always loved it, but then I
had an idea and strong inspiration for all this. I
should say it truly works! The more positive
things you do, the more positive energy enters
your life. It warms from inside and reflects on
those who are around you – you`ll never get
frozen to the bone if you make a little Danish
of yourself!
