EDUCATION
Studying in the USA
Our teacher's name was Gemmo
Kasabar. He is a Filipino born in America. He is
an intellectual and polyglot as he speaks a few
languages: Filipino, English, Spanish and
Chinese. He and his colleagues who worked
with us were were interested in our
personalities as we all came from different
parts of the world and demanded an individual
approach. Gemmo listened attentively and
wondered about the traditions in Russia. He
even promised to visit Moscow one day. So, if
he ever does it, I believe he will experience
bright impressions. His lessons were not very
long but they were always very interesting and
informative. We spoke English all the time, but
besides practicing oral skills, we also read
texts from our course book, wrote sentences
on the blackboard, learnt grammar rules and
did exercises. I loved my English lessons very
much and followed them with joy!
After 12 am we had free time. The
students sang traditional songs, played
baseball, football and basketball. We visited a
lot of attractions, such as Santa Monica
beach, Hollywood, Disneyland, Universal
studios, Knott's Berry Farm and Beverly Hills.
Most of all I remembered our trip to Hollywood,
a famous neighborhood in Los Angeles,
situated west-northwest of Downtown.
One of the most attractive places in
Hollywood is the Alley of Glory. The sidewalks
of this avenue are 15 blocks long, with five-
pointed stars, which marked with the names
of famous people. Every year in the spring
months, there is a presentation of prizes and
awards of the Film Academy. In the Hollywood
Hills, you can see a sign of large white letters
collected in the word HOLLYWOOD. This sign
was designed in 1923 as an advertising move to
attract the tourist. Later, this sign became
the logo of the film industry of the United
States of America. It can often be seen on
television, in the newspapers, movie and on
the Internet. Many great directors, producers,
film actors and writers live and work there but
unfortunately we couldn't see anyone. Maybe
next time.
At the end of the training all the
students were awarded certificates and
special T-shirts. I spent my time usefully and
received an unforgettable language practice
in the charming country. I am grateful to my
parents for the opportunity to visit the United
States of America. No doubt, this is a great
country with a special lifestyle, unique culture
and its own traditions. My cherished dream
now is to get education in America and visit
every state!
