HRUSHEVS’KYI STUDIES:
ORIGINS AND HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT
Summary
This new study by the historian Lubomyr Wynar is devoted to the analysis of the
Hrushevs’kyi studies: their disciplinary structures, research methodologies, archival
and bibliographical resources and intellectual and organizational principles.
Since 1966, which marked the 100th anniversary of Mykhailo Hrushevs’kyi’s
birth, Professor Lubomyr Wynar has been vigorously promoting and developing
Hrushevs’kyi studies (Hrushevs’koznavstvo) and is now justifiably recognized, both
in Ukraine and elsewhere, as their founder.
Mykhailo Hrushevs’kyi (1836—1934), the foremost Ukrainian historian and
the leading promoter of the Ukrainian national and cultural revival in the first
half of the 20th century, was also the main force behind the birth of the first
Ukrainian democracy in 1917—1918 — the Ukrainian National Republic. A
historian, scholar, encyclopedist and history-maker, he proved a unique phenome
non in Ukrainian and world history. This rightly led to the rise of a new discipline,
Hrushevs’kyi studies, which focuses on the life, deeds and legacy of Mykhailo
Hrushevs’kyi. In this respect this discipline may be compared to Shevchenko,
Franko, Shakespeare, Lincoln and other disciplines devoted to the life and work
of notable historical figures who contributed to the enrichment of world civiliza
tion and thus greatly influenced the history of their respective nations and the
world at large.
The present study, based not only on archival and secondary materials but
also on the author’s own extensive published works, is divided into the following
parts: 1) «Introduction;» 2) «Development of Hrushevs’kyi Studies: A Brief Over
view;» 3) «Research Methodology and Disciplinary Structure in Hrushevs’kyi
Studies;» 4) «Mykhailo Hrushevs’kyi Lifework;» 5) «Bibliographical Resources;»
6) «Resource Foundations of Hrushevs’kyi Studies;» 7) «The Organizational-Scho
larly Structure of Hrushevs’kyi Studies;» 8) «Some Concluding Thoughts on the
Task at Hand;» and, 9) «Summary» in English. A select bibliography and an index
of proper names are included.
The present collection also includes Prof. Wynar’s reflective account «In
Service of Hrushevs’kyi Studies», a chapter «Founder of Hrushevs’kyi Studies»
with two articles by Mykola Kovals’kyi «Contributions of Prof. Lubomyr Wynar
to the Problem of Scientific School of History» a
