ALEXANDROUPOLIS
The princess of Thrace… A city dressed in blue
Alexandroupolis, the capital city of the prefecture of Evros, is located roughly
30km away from the Greek-Turkish borders. The whole area around
Alexandroupolis is a perfect holiday destination because of its advantageous
location, the admirable natural beauty and the great history.
It is one of the few cities in Greece facilitated with an airport, a port, a railway
station and a road network, dominated by Egnatia motorway.
HISTORY
It started in 1875 as a small village where fishermen used to live. Slowly its
population grew. During the Ottoman domination it was named Dedeağaç.
The specific name in Turkish means “grandfather’s tree” and is based on a
local tradition of a wise dervish, who spent most of his life in the shade of a
local tree and was eventually buried beside it. In 1913, during the second
Balkan War, it stayed for a while in Greek government but eventually was
given to Bulgaria with the Treaty of Bucharest. In 1920 King Alexander the
first of Greece liberated Dedeağaç, which was renamed Alexandroupolis.
