It may still look like winter outside, but it’s March and spring is here! And for many, with it come spring colds and seasonal allergies. One of the reasons people have such trouble during this time of year is because they have not shifted their foods from winter to spring. According to Dr. John Douillard, author of The 3-Season Diet, in winter, the body becomes dried out and produces excessive mucus from the wet, sweet foods we typically eat during that time of year. In the spring, we must counter balance this dryness. Nature provides the antidote in the form of cold vegetables, and bitter and astringent foods like peas, leafy greens, and root vegetables that clean and detoxify the body. Just as the saying goes “April showers, bring May flowers,” the moisture of spring softens the ground and opens it up so that seeds can germinate and plants can grow in summer. The spring climate also softens and opens up the tissues of our bodies making it the perfect time for detoxification and cleansing.

Eating seasonally is one of the easiest ways to stay healthy. However, our modern food system makes it challenging to know what’s in season because when we go to the grocery store, everything is always available. Here are a few tips on how to easily eat seasonally:

Look at what’s on sale – Often times the produce that is on sale is also what’s in season because the store has a lot of it and it’s easily available.

Visit your farmer’s market – The farmers are bringing what they are growing to market. Sometimes they do offer foods that are grown in a hoop house, but if you ask, they can tell you which fruits and veggies are in season.

Join a CSA – CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. You invest in a farm or cooperative and get fresh, local, organic produce from what they grow. My family uses the Fresh Picks service. I like it because they deliver to our home. If you live in the Chicagoland area, give them a try and get $10 off your first order! Go to www.freshpicks.com and just put “nutrisults” in the “Exclusions” field on the Account Dashboard. If you live outside this area, you can go to www.localharvest.org and find out which CSAs are near you.

You can also use this Spring Grocery List to slowly start transitioning from winter to spring foods and help your body healthily live in harmony with nature! Click here to receive the Nutrisults Spring Grocery List.
