RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS EDUCATION
YWCA Adelaide takes an early intervention and primary prevention approach to our policy and program priority of eliminating gender-based violence . We have been working closely with YWCA Canberra in reviewing and developing our Respectful Relationship Education resources , including the Respect Communicate Choose ( RCC ) program in primary schools , the Relationship Things program in high school , and the Respect Ed training for teachers and educators .
YWCA Adelaide has been delivering RCC to primary school students since 2012 , and in the 2015 / 16 year we delivered to Pedare Christian College , Thiele Primary School , Gawler District College , and Salisbury North Primary School .
Two of our staff delivered Respect Ed training in Canberra to social workers and educators in April 2016 , enabling them to delivery age-appropriate and evidence based respectful relationships education to children and young people .
We are also excited to announce that in 2017 YWCA Adelaide is working with the Southgate Institute for Health , Society and Equity at Flinders University on a long term evaluation project of the RCC program .
BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS , CONNECT-4 & YOUTH SERVICES
The Big Brothers Big Sisters program provides long term one-to-one mentoring for vulnerable young people ( Littles ) aged 7-17 by adult volunteers ( Bigs ). Over the last year , 24 Big Brothers Big Sisters matches were supported in South Australia by YWCA Adelaide .
YWCA Adelaide also supported 44 young people to participate in positive recreational community activities via the Connect-4 group mentoring program for young people from Defence families and those on the waiting list for the Big Brothers Big Sisters program .
Sadly , YWCA Adelaide ’ s government funding for Big Brothers Big Sisters ceased on June 30 th 2016 . YWCA Adelaide had been the program delivery partner of Big Brothers Big Sisters in South Australia since 2003 and we have been proud to work alongside Big Brothers Big Sisters Australia to support children and young people in South Australia to access this important program . While we are disappointed with the funding loss , we are pleased to advise that Big Brothers Big Sisters Australia has agreed to take over delivery South Australia and will work to secure ongoing sustainable funding for the program .
YWCA Adelaide is also incredibly proud of the youth services we provided to young people at the HIVE 12-25 Youth Service in Tea Tree Gully , and were disappointed to see its closure and loss of funding in November 2015 .
