Crossing the Bridge Project
EMBED SLIDESHOW HERE
Crossing the Bridge is an innovative
support project for African women
living with disabilities and African
women providing care to children,
partners or other family members
living with disabilities.
Crossing the Bridge provides a safe and
supportive environment for women to
come
together
to
share
their
experiences, to encourage and support
one other, to network and to address
challenges or barriers they face when
accessing mainstream services in South
Australia. Participating women are also
empowered to take up leadership roles
and have a voice in the wider community.
Crossing the Bridge facilitates a number
of group activities including a weekly
engagement meeting for sewing, knitting,
and crocheting classes; information
sessions with representatives from local
13
services; socialisation and networking; as
well as individual support and linking with
service providers. Food and access to an
interpreter are also provided.
Once a month, we invite a guest speaker
to present an information session held at
Thebarton Community Centre on a
service or initiative of interest to
participants. These sessions have
enabled discussion around disability and
other health related issues. A range of
guest speakers have covered topics from
support for children with autism to
managing menopause and women’s
health issues.
The project has been promoted through
radio and community networks, and we
hope to grow the group as it continues to
be successful with the participants.
