Heather Crosby Farewell
Heather Crosby was President of YWCA Adelaide from 1964-1968 and went
on to be the Executive Director throughout the 1970s. A YWCA Adelaide
and YWCA Australia Life Member, Heather attended five World YWCA
Councils, was a member of the World YWCA Executive, and often
powerfully recalls a YWCA witness visit to South Africa after the Soweto riots
to check on the wellbeing of imprisoned YWCA women.
Heather is credited with leading YWCA Adelaide through the liberating
and life-changing second wave of feminism when the YWCA – globally –
shifted from being a youth organisation to being a women’s organisation.
At 92, she has relocated to Townsville to be closer to her daughters. Life
Members and friends joined Heather for a farewell morning tea this year
and at our Round the World Breakfast, Heather was one of our guest
speakers, sharing her passion for the YWCA and stories of her association
with the movement. This short history film, captured on a Members bus tour
in 2011, provides an insight in to our history and to the extraordinary
woman Heather Crosby.
