Avodah must be Besimcha ( with joy ). The Tzemach Tzedek and Reb Nochum went to the Alter Rebbe and asked , “ If so , why are you crying ?” The Alter Rebbe replied , “ They are tears of joy .”
The large crowd gathered along the bank of the river to watch the Rebbe perform Tashlich . Some Chassidim asked the Rebbe if they should speak to the crowd and explain to them the custom of Tashlich . The Rebbe replied in the affirmative and that they should speak in English and Yiddish . After Tashlich the Tmimim went to speak in various Shuls , in accordance with the Rebbe ’ s instructions on the previous Shabbos .
WEDNESDAY , 9TH OF TISHREI -EREV YOM KIPPUR :
The Rebbe Davened Shacharis slightly earlier than usual . After Shacharis , the elder Chassidim approached the Rebbe and asked if they can receive Lekach ( honey cake ). The Rebbe answered in the affirmative . As the Rebbe started to distribute Lekach he recounted that the Friediker Rebbe would say , “ To give Lekach is an old custom . For we see that the Baal Shem Tov used to say , ‘ I am giving you Lekach and Hashem should give you a good year ”. The Rebbe RaShaB added , ‘ And a sweet year .’ To many people the Rebbe said , “ A happy year !” and to some people , the Rebbe gave Brochos on specific issues !
Reb Mordechai Shusterman related that when he heard that the Rebbe was giving Lekach he was in East Flatbush with Reb Chaim Meir Bukiet and Mr . Rappaport . They
