31st August – The National People’s Congress Standing Committee sets the undemocratic terms for the 2016 legislative council and 2017 Chief Executive elections.

22nd September – The Hong Kong Federation of Students (HKFS) and ‘Scholarism’ begin class boycotts, calling for universal suffrage; the resignation of Chief Executive Leung Chun-yi; the withdrawal of the NPC Standing Committee; and electoral reforms.

26th September – Joshua Wong, a 17 year old activist and organiser of Scholarism, is arrested and held for two days.

27th September – People begin to protest outside central government offices. Police use pepper spray on peaceful protesters and more people are arrested.

28th September – The Occupy Central movement is initiated by Benny Tai. The presence of 100,000 students causes tensions to rise. In response, police used tear gas.

3rd October – Pro-Beijing groups, Triad gang members, business owners and others attack the student protesters.
