PERFECT YOUR PUTTING
We can spend all the time on the range hitting a
driver but that will only come out of the bag 10-11
times on your round, the putter will be in play 3 times
the amount of time. Practice your putting!
As a part of my practice regime I regularly use this
device. The many lines, pegs and mirrors involved
help me to concentrate on a variety of key points
within my putting stroke. The mirror allows me to see
myself over the ball, the red line ensures my putter
starts square to the ball, the gateway at the front of
the practice tool ensures my putt is heading in the
right direction as it leaves the face of the club and
the pegs either side the putter head help me to keep
my swing on a straight path and on plane as I stroke
the ball.
These key points are something that I work on before
tournaments and you can easily replicate them with
what’s already in your bag.
You’ll only need a few tee pegs to make this set up
work but the key thing is to make sure you are strict
in the tolerance you allow yourself. If you set the
path of your swing to be tight to your putter head
(as shown) then you will perform better over longer
distances. When you have first set up just practice
on keeping your swing path inside the guides, there
is no aiming point, it’s just to help create a feeling
you recognise. Once you have done this 10-15
times without clipping the tee pegs, then set a small
box with four markers and aim to get your ball into
that space.
When you have mastered this then set yourself a
small gate way to aim through, around 24 inches in
front of you, aim to hit ball through these markers
and in to the designated area. As you become more
confident at the first distance set up an area further
away and alternate between the two. Try to get 10
balls away (5 at each distance) without hitting any tee
pegs with your putter or ball.
This part of the drill will require a longer or shorter
swing and with the guides in place it should help to
create more consistency across all lengths of putts.
