QWHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTER SURGERY ?

Patients should normally expect a hospital stay of between 2 and 5 days . Arrangements will be made for stitches to be removed about 2 weeks after the operation , and a followup review appointment will be arranged for about 6 weeks after surgery .
Physiotherapy will be provided to help strengthen muscles and get the most from your new hip , whilst occupational therapy will help you integrate with every day life .

QWHAT HAPPENS WHEN I GET HOME ?

The first thing you will notice is that the pain and stiffness you had to live with before has gone . You will however be recovering from your operation so you will notice you cannot flex the hip up as far as you might like and that you have some swelling and bruising in the operated leg . Don ’ t be surprised if you feel rather tired for the first few days when you get home this is quite normal . You will find that you can walk greater distances each day and we encourage you to do as much as you feel comfortable with . Walking , cycling and swimming ( but avoid breaststroke ) are good exercises . You should be back driving your car at between 4 and 6 weeks .

Case study Andrew

Pearson recently performed hip replacement surgery on star of musical theatre GARY WILMOT .
“ For years I believed my hip problem was muscular . I tried several Chiropractors with varying degrees of success . When I started taking more pain killers than one should , just to get through the day I realised I had to accept the fact that I needed a new hip .”
GARY WILMOT
With Gary wanting to return to a full time career as one of the country ’ s favourite song and dance men , he wanted to make sure he went to an absolute hip expert . After hearing that Andrew Pearson fitted the bill and used a range of different implants to suit the individual patient , he decided to travel to Birmingham for his surgery .
“ Although the prospect of an operation was scary , it has turned out to be a life changer for me . I am now pain free and able to do things I haven ’ t done for ten years . I am back to taking steps two at a time . A new hip is of course a physical procedure , but the mental effect is extraordinary . I have my life back thanks to the skill of hip surgeon Andrew Pearson .”
GARY WILMOT
Gary is now looking forward to rehearsals for a new show called BIG - just months after Andrew Pearson performed his hip replacement operation .
Andrew Pearson operates privately at The BMI Priory Hospital , Edgbaston . For more information visit www . themidlandhipcentre . co . uk call 0121 450 9337 or email joanne @ themidlandhipcentre . co . uk
