Growing up, family was always important to
Porsha Cills. “Parents are paramount to the
success of a child,” she says, reflecting on the
values that helped her to co-create the DC-
based charity, BePolished. It’s what she and
Rasha Price, the other half of BePolished, base
their success on, allowing girls from single-
parent households, from middle school to high
school, to come together and learn how
to become polished individuals in
today’s society.

grown up in a single-parent household
herself and experienced the struggles
firsthand. Having been involved with
charity throughout their lives and not wanting
to see others endure the stereotypes associated
with single-parent homes, both felt a desire to
engage with their community and fill those
voids in other’s lives. And after a chance
meeting in 2013 at the Woman of the Word
(WOW) Bible Study in Alexandria, VA, that
was a calling, that it
was meant to be.”
