FRUITS
Autumn has arrived. And with a new season comes a whole new range of fruits
and vegetables that we can include into our eating pattern, and at a nice price
too. That’s the benefit of eating seasonally – cheap and great quality produce.
Nutrition expert Emma Stubbs explains.
o as we sadly say goodbye to lovely priced
luscious berries, fabulous figs and our sweet
and juicy stone fruit for another season, we
get to introduce some of those autumn favourites.

Apples
So many varieties and colours. Right now Royal Gala,
Golden Delicious, Red Delicious and Granny Smith are
plentiful, and the prices of my beloved Pink Lady, Fuji
and Sundowner will come down later in the season.
Apples are a good source of dietary fibre that helps
keep our digestive systems healthy, stabilising
cholesterol levels and adds bulk to keep us satiated for
longer. They also provide some immune-system
boosting vitamin C, which is perfect as the weather
cools, and potassium to help ensure our muscles
and nerves are working optimally and we’re
maintaining a healthy blood pressure.
Enjoy fresh as a snack or chopped in a
fruit salad. Poach or stew apples with
some cinnamon and clove for a
wonderful addition to porridge
or yoghurt. Stuff them for a
nice after dinner dessert,
and for those special
occasions, they make a
lovely pie, tart, crumble or
teacake.

curries, used in ‘slaws and
made into a sauce for the
