Forward Congratulations! Because of your encouragement and support your child has chosen to embark on a journey of discovery that will change his/her life forever. Now more than ever, people from around the world must understand one another, and your child has taken the first step in doing this. As internationally-minded citizens, YFU students are better prepared to play a positive role in the changing, interdependent global environment. With over sixty years of youth exchange expertise, Youth For Understanding (YFU) is equipped to help your child evolve into a more independent, competent and confident young adult, enhancing educational and professional opportunities. YFU’s worldwide network is equipped to deliver the learning opportunities of a lifetime for your child—and support your family every step of the way. This handbook will give you more information about how to prepare your entire family for the YFU exchange. It is written as a reference guide for you, describing the many ways you can help your child prepare for and maximize the exchange experience and then stay involved with YFU afterward. Mission Statement Youth For Understanding (YFU) advances intercultural understanding, mutual respect, and social responsibility through educational exchanges for youth, families, and communities. Acknowledgments The present edition of this handbook is based on work previously done by Mr. Gordon Snow, a veteran YFU volunteer. YFU greatly appreciates the time and expertise contributed by YFU volunteers, alumni, families and staff. Many thanks to all of the YFU students and families who provided photographs for publication in this handbook and in previous editions.
