In the days and weeks to come, YEO Network staff will be building out our alumni program and working towards increasing our engagement with former members of the YEO Network. We are so glad that you joined us in celebrating 10 years of YEO. We would like to welcome all of the new young elected officials that have joined the YEO Network since the last issue of the YEO Front Line News. Please join us in welcoming our new members and let us know if you would like to connect with any of the new YEOs from your state! MB YEO F r o n t l i n e N e w s • Q3 2015 • PG 12 Alumni Welcome New YEO Network Members ME This year’s recipient is Wisconsin state Assemblyman David Bowen. Bowen is in his first year of serving the people of Wisconsin State Assembly’s 10th district, but he’s no stranger to championing the needs of workers and their families. Prior to his election to the Assembly in 2014, Bowen served on the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors. He was the youngest member of that board and one of the youngest Black elected officials in the history of Milwaukee. On the board, he was the lead author of a living wage bill and fought the assembly to maintain local control of this policy. Prior to his election, Bowen served as program director of Urban Underground where he oversaw the creation and implementation of youth programs, services, and professional development training for adults interested in youth civic engagement and leadership development. He volunteered with Urban Underground while attending the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, studying educational policy and community studies. He also has worked with the Americorps program Public Allies. This year’s recipient is Michigan state Rep. Jon Hoadley. A product of PFAW Foundation’s Youth Leadership Program pipeline, Hoadley worked with fellow YEOs Mayor Nathan Triplett and Rep. Stephanie Chang to combat and defeat preemption legislation that would prevent municipalities from implementing LGBTQ nondiscrimination ordinances and invalidate those already passed. Hoadley is in his first term representing Kalamazoo and portions of Portage and Kalamazoo Township. He serves on the Election Committee and the House Appropriations Committee, where he also serves on the Judiciary (minority vice chair), Agriculture (minority vice chair), and Higher Education Subcommittees. He serves on the NCSL standing committee for Redistricting and Elections. Hoadley is president of Badlands Strategies, a progressive public affairs firm and consults for clients across the country. He serves as the vice president of CARES, an HIV/AIDS Service Organization in Southwest Michigan; sits on the Executive Committee of his state political party; and is a member of the Justice Caucus. Hoadley received the Norman Lear Alumni Award from People For the American Way Foundation? and regularly trains with the Front Line Leaders Academy. YEO FEATURE: NETWORKING Public Service Leadership Award The Public Service Leadership Award seeks to recognize a YEO with a distinguished record of public service to their community. Progressive Movement Leadership Award This award seeks to recognize a YEO who is demonstrating leadership in the progressive movement at large and has shown great dedication to moving a progressive agenda, both locally and nationally. COVER Elected in 2013, Paschall was proud to sponsor the Hyattsville Human Rights Act, making Hyattsville the first city in the county and only the fifth jurisdiction in Maryland to pass explicitly transgender-inclusive non-discrimination laws. His legislative priorities focus on expanding voting access, creating smart local development, increasing recreation activities, and furthering environmental sustainability measures. In his professional career, he currently serves as executive director at FreeState Legal Project and previously served as senior policy counsel at the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, working to advance the group’s policy priorities in federal administrative agencies and at the White House. He earned his J.D. from Hofstra University School of Law and his B.A. from Texas A&M University. Leadership Awards
