tove styrke Tove Styrke in Philly Swedish pop sensation toured USA 25-year-old singer-songwriter Tove Styrke rose to fame as a contestant on Swedish Idol in 2009, where she finished third. Since then, she’s released three internationally acclaimed albums—the latest one called ‘Sway’ came out earlier this year. It’s been almost 10 years since you participated in ‘Idol’. In what way have you developed since then, personally and musically? So much has happened in these years. When I started, I was 16 years old. So that in itself is big—the difference between being 16 and 26 is huge! In addition to that, I’ve learned so much when working on my albums and projects. Especially with the last album—I’m in a place where I’m more confident than ever, and that gives me a lot of freedom and makes it more fun to work. What do you miss the most from home when you are on tour, apart from family and friends? I miss the feeling of knowing a place. Like where to go, which bus to take and all the shortcuts. I love Stockholm and I have chosen to stay there. Many artists leave Sweden to make music somewhere else, but I really enjoy working in Stockholm and have it as my base, as it’s calmer than other places. I can travel and get to do these amazing things, but then come back home and have my day to day-life in Stockholm. photo: emma svensson So, what’s the forecast for the next 10 years? I hope that I am still doing this and enjoying it. It’s a goal for me to always stay curious and challenge myself in this profession. Do you have an ultimate goal, or have you already accomplished something you thought was impossible? This entire year has been a pinch-yourself-moment. I have done so many exciting things that I couldn’t have dreamed of, such as being the opening act for Katy Perry and Lorde. That was so much fun. In that aspect, it has been an incredible year. Going from writing music I think is cool—in a basement in Sweden— to having it discovered by Lorde, who liked it so much that she asked me to open for her on her tour. That is so cool! So maybe in 10 years I get to discover someone and have them open for me! sacc-philadelphia year in review 2018 23
