Interview with Helena Berggren
Helena Berggren is a 37-year-old Swede that has made a lot of changes in her life. She moved to Philadelphia
in 2008 and got married to a man she met during her study abroad program at Elon University in North
Carolina. Three years ago she left the six-year long mentally and financially abusive marriage and a year after
she made the choice to change her career and purpose. Today, Helena focuses on helping people get out
of their dark place whether it is fear, depression, anxiety or abuse. She calls herself the SunnySoul Coach™
and practices EFT, Emotional Freedom Technique. In 2017 she got her first book published and the interns had
the opportunity to ask Helena Berggren a little more about the book and the fascinating story behind it.
Tell us about There is Light and how come you decided to write it?
Simply put: a constant nagging in my mind to share with others what I had
learned on my journey through abuse, fear, depression, anxiety, and finding a
way to love myself again. I really wanted to inspire people to find a way to see
that they are worthy of being loved and that it is possible. The feeling of wanting
to write a book would not go away and I always found a way to start a book
but never got very far with it. I think I have about four books started somewhere
on my laptop.
In 2016 I was asked to be one of the speakers at the Annual “Spring Energy
Event”. I had no idea what to talk about but I wanted to share my story, so I said
yes. While I was thinking and discussing topics for my presentation a friend of
mine just dropped “Would it not be cool if you had a book by then?” That was in
January, and the event was in April. My friend inspired me to write a short-book,
which is normally 150 pages or less. It was not until then that I realized that it was
ok to write a book that “only” had around 100 pages.
The first thing I did was to Google if it was even possible to write a book in only three months. The answers I
found were not encouraging but I thought - why not try? I felt like I at least owed it to myself. Once I thought
about it a little bit more I got excited – 100 pages felt more doable than 300! I figured it could be one way to
get my feet wet, since I had never done such a thing, writing a whole book. Long nights and pretty much no
personal life was upon me.
The day before the event, 100 finished copies of my book arrived at my doorstep ready for me to take
them with me. I cried out loud between screams of joy as I held one book in my hands and looked at it
in a different lights and angles. I had done it! The book was done and I was really, for real, holding it in
my hands. I now had about 24 hours to finish my speech, which thankfully had gotten a name by now -
Perfectly Unhappy.
“ I was battling with what loving yourself even meant for a while.
Do you buy new shoes or eat ice cream…? I mean we all know that
is not the way to go but those are the types of substitutes we go for “
I wrote this book specifically to give people an easy “in” to the field of self-love. I was battling with what loving
yourself even meant for a while. Do you buy new shoes or eat ice cream…? I mean we all know that is not the
way to go but those are the types of substitutes we go for. We actually prevent ourselves from reaching what
we want by indulging in bad habits and feeling like we have to have all our ducks in the row before we can
even get started. I try to highlight these diversions so people can start to recognize themselves for what they
are. I hope people that read my book understand that they are not alone with their feelings and problems. I
like to open doors for them. Allow them to see that there is something more out there – or inside of them really.
In my book I share actual methods to break free from whatever darkness one may be in. It is a self-help book
for people that are just getting started.
