Year in Highlights 2014 ENG | Page 23

The format of this year’s Gathering differed from previous years. The first day was structured around two panel sessions: "Achievements in Guaranteeing Equality: Experiences Promoting Legislation and Programs Benefiting Women" led by guest speaker Dr. Teresa Incháustegui, and "Barriers to Real Equality" led by Dr. Ramona Biholar. The sessions also included panellists from each of the American sub-regions, who shared their perspectives on the progress and challenges in the promotion of gender equality in their parliaments.

On the second day, the Group turned to strategic planning activities in a

workshop-style environment facilitated by Keila González of the National Democratic Institute (NDI). Delegates collectively established priority thematic areas for action over the next year. The priorities identified are: prevention of violence against women, employment and economic empowerment of women, and women’s political leadership.

The presentations and other resources are available under this Gathering's event page on the ParlAmericas website.

During the Gathering, the delegates united their voices to condemn the recent mass kidnappings committed by the militant Islamist group Boko Haram in Nigeria. #bringbackourgirls
