DJ XXXotic Mami: Mrs. Sonja Blade known to the twitter world as @SonjaBladeMusic. How are you?
Sonja Blade: I’m Great
ticMami: Lets start off straight to the point. You recently dropped a video to “Guess You Ain’t Heard Me” Which took the Underground level by storm and reached the ears of Industry professionals. However, I read some of the comments that was added to your YouTube page like “ You’re a new jack, how you look coming at Nicki?” and umm “ These new chicks coming out of nowhere, thinking their doing something”,
favorite “Who are you?” How do you address the, in your words “Non Believers” in my words “Haters?”and my favorite “Who are you?” How do you address the, in your words “Non Believers” in my words “Haters?”
Sonja Blade: Well first I was talking purely about emcees with lyrical ability. Eve, Foxy Brown, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Biggie, Tupac, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Lauren Hill, Lil Wayne, just to name a few. I put the names on the chalk board (referring to scene in the video) who have phenomenal lyrical ability. I have been in this game for along time and have learned an earned my spot.
DJ XXXotic Mami: Speaking of your spot, a lot of people that are not real Hip-Hop heads don’t know about the time that you have put in. They don’t know about the record deals. Please shed some light for the (slight smurk) non believers.
Sonja Blade: My journey in Hiphop has been long and interesting. Back in 99 I was signed to SoSo, which was under Virgin Records. I have worked with a lot of famous producers (platinum producers), a lot of artist (main stream and independent). It was interesting at the time but I was young, too young I didn’t know what I had in front of me. I didn’t understand an advance, I didn’t even know what a bar was. (Sonja laughs) I would go in the booth and just sit until I got tired. When I came out everybody would just be sitting there staring at me. When I got the call that I was signed and going to pick up my check. I didn’t understand money. I signed, got my check and went shopping, a lot of shopping. See those days were different; we rapped, we signed, we got paid, we spent money. A&R’s built careers, mangers built their artist, they did not wait for the artist to get a buzz then take credit for the work. Yes, things were much different.
