There are only three major problems facing South Africa at this time: Unemployment, Unemployment, Unemployment! Unemployment is not just some people’s problem — it really is every South African’s problem. One nation...One economy.. One tomorrow for our children. How will that future look if today 2/5 families do not have ANY form of income? If 55% of the nation does not have food security? (Yes, 55% of people do not have food on their table tonight.!) Most of us want to run away from these scary thoughts. Many want “the government” or “big business’ to sort it out. At DreamWorker, we step right in to do our bit. We are a non profit, social development organisation dedicated to helping unemployed people in the lower end of the economic sector find work. If you have ever struggled to find work, you will know what it feels like…..desperation and hopelessness are daily companions. DreamWorker is all about inspiring, uplifting and giving hope to the unemployed, helping maximise their chances of securing work. We currently operate from a central office in Observatory, with offices in Atlantis, Gugulethu and Port Shepstone, as well as fieldworkers operational in Hout Bay, Khayelitsha and Elsies River. With suitable funding, it is our dream to take this programme into all the major metropolitan areas across South Africa. Since our 2008 launch, DreamWorker has achieved great results: 1. We have engaged with and registered almost 14 000 unemployed people to date and continue to engage with an additional 2 000 people per year. 2. We have recorded work placements of over 720 000 days of work, which translates into economic wages of over R93 million! 3. Our cost to social impact ratio is over 1 200% ! Furthermore, we have launched our Link of Love programme. Vouchers are sold for R100. Each voucher enables an unemployed person to work for a day in their own community— caring for the sick or elderly, working in the schools etc. Thus far, we have facilitated 2 135 days of community work, which means R213 500 into the hands of the unemployed! One less day of total despair. One more day of hope through contribution!
