Most of the plants used in our landscapes are considered tropical or sub-tropical. Because these plants are best suited for warmer climates, frost damage can become apparent when temperatures reach low thirties, while other plants may withstand even colder. Frost blankets are a popular form of protection, but are often used incorrectly. These pointers will help ensure that your frost blankets are effective.

In addition to using frost cloth appropriately, these helpful hints will contribute to a healthy landscape.

Using Christmas lights near the bottom of plants will radiate heat.

Don't fertilize - new growth is more sensistive to frost damage.

Don't prune sensitive plants until freezing has subsided (around late February)

Do not gather the drape around the trunk.

Allow the drape to cover all the way out to a drip line, if possible.

Wrap the trunks of young citrus trees loosely to the ground (these can be left all winter).
