The new scientists Krishna X Amin (Coll, 2013-18) Written by Charlie Peters Krishna Amin is the only subject of this year’s Wykeham Journal still to be studying at Winchester. As is expected of Collegemen, Krishna excels in academia, having recently acquired a place to study Natural Sciences at St Cath a rine’s College, Cambridge. Currently he is in the midst of his Pre-U studies. He is taking five subjects. In his role as Deputy Head of Community Service, Krishna is making use of his academic ability through teaching science at primary schools. Krishna infront of Sparsholt Primary School After his obligatory service in the C.C.F., Krishna opted to spend the rest of his Wykehamical Wednesday afternoons in Community Service. He has been teaching science at primary school level since then. When he started, the job was rather sporadic, as Wykehamists were teaching in various schools with pupils of differing ability every week. Finally, they settled at Sparsholt. In his role as science mentor, Krishna is in charge of weekly teaching sessions for four Sparsholt students. Preparation for each lesson requires teaching planning and the transfer of science equipment from Win Coll to Sparsholt. Sparsholt students do not enjoy the facilities that Krishna benefited from at primary school and continues to use at Winchester. For the upcoming lesson at Sparsholt, Wykehamists will be teaching their budding scientists about acids and bases. To this end, Krishna and the other mentors have been preparing their lessons in their spare time. Dr Barron, the teacher attached to this community service activity, has been boiling red cabbage indicator to make sure they are all set to teach. It’s clear from our discussion that Krishna appreciates the value of what is being delivered through his Community Service. Not only do his pupils benefit from the science equipment and general school kit that Winchester offers them, but they also gain the invaluable treasure of young mentors who enjoy their role and look forward to each lesson. That treasure is a precious asset in Winchester’s teaching tradition, so Wykehamists are nurtured into delivering the role themselves. The Wykeham Journal 2017  43
