The Wykeham Campaign was instigated in 2008, and you have helped Winchester to raise its game. Winchester was founded on philanthropy, and those who have contributed with time or financial support have continued the tradition, paving the way for future success. Over the past 10 years, 2,800 of you have donated over £33million in support of the Wykeham Campaign. You have enabled us to offer places to boys from all backgrounds. This was our Founder’s first intent, and is why bursaries are so important. Our ambition is to be able to fund the equivalent of 10% of boys on full bursaries and a further 20% on part bursaries, helping about 200 boys overall. In 2008, 41 boys were on bursaries at a cost of £422,000, and 10 years on 132 (19%) boys are on bursaries at a cost of £3.2million. We are particularly proud of the fact that 14 boys are on full bursaries. You have built a Treasury fit to house the school’s collections, enhancing our pupils’ education and sharing our collections with the public. A total of £3.5million was secured for the Treasury to be converted into the building it is today and to create an endowment to contribute towards the running costs. You have helped to encourage boys to take an interest in the natural world by enabling us to employ the Duncan Louis Stewart Fellow in Natural History, with £1million having been raised to fund the post. You will have read in the 2015 Wykeham Journal about Duncan, and about his remarkable contribution to the natural world in the course of his short life. You have made sure that a Quirister education is available to any boy by supporting the Shedden Bursary Fund for Quiristers. A total of £1.5million was secured for Quirister bursaries. I would particularly like to thank Béatrice Lupton for her considerable help as Chairman of the Q Committee. The ultimate gift is, of course, to leave a legacy, and 260 of you have remembered Winchester in your will. A total of £8million has been received in legacies since 2008. You will read the remarkable story about Cecil (aka Bill) Hodges in this WJ. Bill was quoted as being a ‘legend’ in LADbible (a first for us!). The website states that ‘the LADbible Group builds youth communities across multiple channels including our websites, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, YouTube, AppleTV, Google News and our apps’. Bill was inspired by the Wykeham Journal and the stories which brought Winchester to life, and he never would have dreamt about featuring on J K Rowling’s Twitter account! Bill died on 14 November 2016 and left half of his estate to Winchester. You will have read in the 2017 Wykeham Journal about the most recent challenge, which is to raise as much as we can towards the cost of the new Kingsgate Park Sports Centre. We are absolutely delighted to have the support of a powerful and influential Capital Campaign Committee, with members based in the UK, USA and Hong Kong, supporting our efforts. If you would like to read about our progress (as any information I give in this report will rapidly become out-of-date!) please visit the Kingsgate Park pages on our website, wincollsoc.org I would particularly like to take this opportunity to thank those who stepped up when I first arrived to form the Wykeham Campaign Committee (WCC). In particular, Richard Morse (K, 1972-76), Chairman of the WCC, was instrumental in setting up the structure, and Robert Woods (G, 1960-64), offered sterling support as Chairman of the Development Committee. Nick Ferguson (C, 1961-66) has taken over not only as Chairman of the WCC but also as Chairman of the KP Campaign Committee, and is in addition the Fellow representing Development on the Governing Body. The significant help and support that we receive from the Warden, first Sir David Clementi (E, 1962-67) and now Charles Sinclair (B, 1961-66), and from other volunteers on Go Bo is hugely appreciated by all in the Win Coll Soc department. It is no exaggeration to say that we could not do what we do without their support! Finally, I would like to thank you again for your generosity and many friendships built over the past 10 years. Without you none of this would have happened. Here’s to the next 10 years! . The Wykeham Journal 2018 45
