Warden’s Report

( B , 19 61 - 6 6 )
It is 10 years since the Wykeham Journal
and its predecessor began to open up
Winchester College, in terms of its
organisation, culture and intent.
W
e now look back over those years
through the prism of the Governing
Body’s current objectives. Here be
numbers … but readers of this WJ will cope!
Offering the widest possible access to pupils
capable of profiting from the education provided
In 2018 a total of £3.7m in fee awards (£3.3m bursaries,
£0.4m scholarships, music and other awards) was
granted to 188 pupils; in 2008 this figure was £1.4m
(£0.4m bursaries, £1m Scholarships, 165 pupils).
The financial award element of scholarships has
been phased out in favour of needs-based grants.
The intention is to be in a position to fund about
200 pupils overall on an average bursary of 66%.
The admission of pupils at 6th Form, 13 in 2018,
further helps to diversify the backgrounds of
those coming to the school, to its great benefit.
Promoting intellectual and educational excellence
Over the last 10 years university destinations
have remained broadly unchanged, with a total
of 401 boys going to Oxbridge and 120 to North
American Universities. The value of the Cambridge
Pre-U curriculum has been established over this
period and the taking of A levels by our pupils
has been phased out. In 2018, 86.4% of examinees
graded D1-M1 at Pre-U, and 92.1% graded A*/A
at IGCSE. There continues to be strong participation
in national academic competitions, and Olympiad
