The third, currently in his second year, was introduced by the golf county manager for Sussex where he was in the under-16 team. The fourth recipient also hails from the Sussex junior squad and currently plays off a handicap of five. Each bursary boy is likely to become in time the Captain of Golf. Jack Keating, now studying Politics and Economics as an undergraduate at Aberdeen University, is a talented natural sportsman who has won tennis tournaments in Scotland and could equally have pursued tennis to the same level as his golf. Jack’s father, who builds golf courses for a living, was himself injured while on the tortuous route to becoming an Olympic swimmer and consequently always instilled in Jack the importance of having a secure academic background on which to fall back. Robert Moore brings valuable insight into how to compete and win, having represented Great Britain at hockey in three successive Olympic Games. Jack enjoyed very much playing on the testing, chalk-based parkland course at Hockley. He feels he owes a particular debt of gratitude to Shaun Macey who, as Acting Master-in-Charge of Golf prior to Rob Moore’s appointment, was instrumental in his receiving the bursary. In Jack’s own words, ‘Mr Macey lit the spark for me through his enthusiasm’; in 2014 he also led a team including Jack to an impressive second place finish in the ISGA European Championships. Jack is not seeking to become a golf professional, but his ambition is to be the best ever amateur from Winchester. He hopes ultimately to play in the Amateur Championship. There has been a strong personal plus to the bursary Jack received – he has been able to build a valued friendship with the Sanders family. It is clear that the most effective donations are those where the donor feels passionate about the benefit that his or her generosity bestows, and is able to monitor personally how it changes both the School and the lives of those it assists in the succeeding years. This was manifest in John Singer’s donation of the Steinway piano to New Hall, the establishment of the Duncan Louis Stewart Natural History Society Fellowship and of the Golf bursary instituted by John and Richard Sanders. As an honorary member of the Old Wykehamist Golf Society, the Head Man believes he can wear the best tie of all the sporting clubs! The Wykeham Journal 2015  43
