in the IMAX format. In 1990, when Duncan was born,
Kim chose to leave her professional career to care for
him and in time, for Alexander, William and Emily.
The Stewart family lives in Scotland and, as Kim is
American, they have a cabin in Wisconsin too. David
and Kim have understandably been keen to bring their
children up surrounded by nature. They have travelled
with them around Europe, Africa and South America
and loved experiencing nature’s marvels together.
Duncan was a loving and responsible big brother. Of
course there were the usual spats, but the four Stewart
children were a strong team. Only fifteen months apart,
Duncan and Alexander were inseparable growing up
and their laughter always brought much joy. When
Duncan came home from prep school, William always
slept in Duncan’s room with him. The boys talked late
into the night. William had a million questions and
Duncan did his best with them all! The three boys
were protective of their baby sister and as Emily grew,
she often referred to them collectively as ‘my boys’.
Duncan was always keen to bring his brothers
and his sister along with him in his interests. His
creative sense of humour and fun made him a
lovely travel companion for them all! Duncan loved
scuba diving, tennis, snorkeling, field sports, bird-

played the guitar and the piano and loved American
country music and Scottish reels. Whatever he did,
he enjoyed it and dived in with great enthusiasm.
Duncan’s love of fishing was well known, manifested
as it was at Winchester by his many summer days
and evenings spent on the River Itchen. On one
occasion in Wisconsin, when Duncan (age eleven)
was worried that his little sister Emily (age five) was
beginning to lose her interest in fishing, he put on a
mask and flippers, took a small net, and slipped into
the water behind the boathouse where she was fishing.
He cleverly netted an unsuspecting Largemouth Bass
and swam up and secured it on Emily’s dangling
hook. No one could decide whether Emily or
Duncan had the greater smile on their face. But
Emily only got to know the truth a long time later!
Another time when Duncan was perhaps eight, there
was a formal outdoor lunch with Duncan’s maternal
grandmother and some polite, but rather conservative
guests. Duncan spotted a lizard in a hedge near the
table. He couldn’t resist throwing himself headlong
into the hedge in pursuit of the lizard. Moments
passed as several shocked ladies wondered about this
strange behaviour. Duncan soon emerged covered in
scratches, but wearing a huge smile. In his hand, he
