WRITERS OF SOUTHERN NEVADA WINS 2017 LAS VEGAS VALLEY BOOK FESTIVAL CRYSTAL BOOKMARK AWARD MORGAN ST . JAMES
As a board member of Writers of Southern Nevada , I am so excited to announce that we are one of the two winners of the prestigious 2017 Crystal Bookmark Award . Led by our President Eric James Miller , the board members are Diane Taylor , Greg Blake Miller , Elizabeth Daniels , Steve Fey , Tami Cowden and myself .
This awards project recognizes contributions made to advance the cause of literacy in Southern Nevada . The two awards will be presented at the Opening Reception for the Las Vegas Book Festival Friday , Oct . 20 . Nominees must have made a contribution to the encouragement of the written , spoken and illustrated word in the past calendar year ( September 2016 – September 2017 ). The Las Vegas Book Festival is the largest literary event in Nevada . It will celebrate its 16th year with keynote speakers Daniel Handler , also known as Lemony Snicket , and Sharon Draper , five-time winner of the Coretta Scott King Literary Awards .
Founded in 2010 , Writers of Southern Nevada ( WSN ) is a member-based , 501 ( c )( 3 ) literary organization for professional authors and wordsmiths that strives to advance the craft of writing and keep up with the ever-changing business of being a professional writer through education , collaboration , networking , and shared resources . Its flagship author reading series PAINTED STORIES puts professional artists up on stage with authors so that words turn into works of art live in front of the audience . It ' s monthly Writer ' s Roundtable provides an open forum for authors to share and discuss a variety of creative and business concerns .
Additionally , Writers of Southern Nevada presents workshops for writers with an eye to choosing topics that are not mainstays at writer ’ s conferences . For example , the last workshop was “ Improving Your Presentation Skills ” featuring actor Anthony DiMaria and Toastmaster Brian Gardner . WSN ’ s Writers Roundtable is a monthly forum for members , prospective members and guests to gather , discuss , and / or diverge from a general topic of discussion in a relaxed and casual atmosphere .
