WRITERS ABROAD MAGAZINE : THE THIRD SPACE
You know what it ’ s like when you can ’ t put a book down , but you also do not want it to end . Entry Island was one of those . It is a crime novel packed with history , spanning one and a half centuries . It brings the past to the present and vice versa . And like all good mysteries , leaves you hanging to the bitter ( sweet ) end .
The setting is the Magdalen Islands which sit in the St Lawrence , between Newfoundland and Nova Scotia . The ties to Scotland are without doubt . The characters are strong and believable . The novel pulls on all the senses and expertly describes some of the horrors that took place during the clearances of the Outer Hebrides . I suspect May is a rigorous researcher .
This author brings a beauty and an eloquence of style to a crime novel that is an eye opener to this shameful period of British history .
So yes , I connected . It makes me want to visit the Magdalen Islands very soon .
