Rosie rolled her eyes. “Bush tucker, stupid! That’s the whole point of running away.
To find out for themselves. Make a fresh start.”
“Oh. Then what?”
“It was hard with nobody else to rely on. Only each other.” Rosie paused. “That’s
when they fell in love.”
Daniel’s jaw stiffened. Rosie’s stare burned his cheeks.
“They were 10 years old,” she said. “Just like us.”
Daniel squirmed in his seat and stared at Mrs P’s mouth as a jumble of dates
tumbled out.
Rosie pinched his arm. “We could be Samson and Delilah.”
“Quiet at the back!” Mrs P shouted. “Or you’ll spend the rest of the lesson in the
corridor.”
Titters of laughter swept the classroom. Daniel flinched. Rosie drew a deep breath.
“Let’s do it!” she shouted.
The giggles turned to gasps. Mrs P’s stare pierced Daniel like a spear.
Rosie grabbed his hand. “Come on, Samson!”
