Le Compostier ’ s Worm Hotel

When you and I are helping the environment by composting our food scraps , Rowin Snijder aka Le Compostier , is designing larger worm composting systems for entire communities .
For the past three years Rowin Snijder has been designing and building stylish wooden worm composting furnitures that brighten up urban environments and enable city residents to compost their organic waste together , right in front of their doorsteps .
Urban communities turn waste into value for urban food production & to help green the city .
Rowin calls these vermicomposting systems ‘ Worm Hotels ’, a name that was born during a national
campaign to promote vermicomposting organized by Foodguerrilla . Each Worm Hotel is custom designed for the particular urban location and can be placed right on the sidewalk . Some are even placed in between parked cars & bicycles . The design ensures they are easy to use by groups of city residents , local businesses or families . The Worm Hotels are durable in all weather conditions , secure and tidy .
The Worm Hotel not only allows composting of food scraps , but it has been designed to give space for plants on the top surface and some designs also include a vertical garden . The garden makes the object more attractive to the people but also to the local pollinators . Another function of the garden is to help regulate the
climate inside the furniture by providing insulation in cold weather & cooling by evaporation of water in hot weather conditions .
The latest on-street composter is the Community Composter . A furniture designed for composting the waste of approximately 20 households . One of the three compartments of the furniture is used to warm the internal of the Worm Hotel during wintertime . Composting woodchips in this compartment provides extra warmth for the composting process during cold
