Old earrings have often been made of rhombic and rounded plates bound together with chains . According to researchers : “ Kazakh women have been wearing big , long earrings with pearls . The bigger the earrings , the more valuable they were ”.
Kazakh women used to decorate their hair with lockets . In the 18th century Johann Gottlieb Georgi ( German botanist , naturalist and geographer ) wrote : “ They usually attach wide decoration covered all over with colored feathers and tassels to their hair ”.
Kazakh jewelry for women ’ s braids used to be made of silver , often gilded , designed as a string of medallions or plates that were bound together with rings . The middle medallions or plates were always filigree decorated with inserts of colored stones . Three elements or units of silver or gold plates and medallions inlaid with gems often created other types of decorations for women ’ s braids .
Another type of Kazakh jewelry – finger rings – were cast or molten and hammered . These rings and coronas were soldered and brazed together and usually took on various shapes : oval , round , square , multifaceted , pear-shaped , and others . The Western Kazakhstan finger rings are massive , filigree decorated pieces of jewelry with inserts of gems and grains .
Buckles and fasteners were often heartshaped , multifaceted , almond-shaped or oval , encased with gems , and some of them were designed as openwork or salient .
