Atocha Station (Madrid)
Atocha is the largest transport hub of Madrid and all of Spain, although it cannot boast a large number of paths or platforms.
The station building was built in 1851, but was badly damaged after a strong fire. The renovated station opened in 1892, and
Gustav Eiffel himself put his hand to its reconstruction. The next big modernization of Atochi was made in 1985, as a result of
which a winter garden of 4,000 square meters was located in the waiting room, where palm trees and other exotic plants grow,
more than 550 species of animals and birds live, and a large colony of turtles lives in the local pond. Unfortunately, the Atocha
station became the site of a major terrorist attack in 2004 – as a result of four explosions in suburban trains, 192 people were
killed. In memory of the victims, 192 trees were planted in the station park.
