Blacksmithing When it comes to studying the art of blacksmithing, it is difficult to find a better location than Bryn Athyn. In addition to offering a beautiful and well-equipped shop that would be the envy of any professional smith, we also provide access to an incredible collection of metalwork that challenges the very notion of what blacksmithing is. Working under the direction of professional instructors who are nationally recognized as some of the best in the industry today, you will have the opportunity to experience metalworking in a most exciting and comprehensive way. Iron Foundry with Jeb Wood Forged by Design with Michael Rossi July 18–22 — $675 July 25–29 — $675 Students will be given a basic understanding of iron and its functions. Students will have the opportunity to sand mold and cast objects for themselves in ductile iron and participate in melting and pouring iron employing a traditional cupola. This class will focus on using the techniques of blacksmithing to make useful objects for the home. Starting with fundamental hand-forging exercises, the class quickly moves into self-directed assignments. Each student will complete 2-3 small projects, and gain an understanding of the versatility and characteristics of forging steel. Rossi will also discuss the relationship of architecture to design in metal. Plan on working hard, having fun, and leaving with some new work! Jeb S. Wood is the founder and owner of Independent Casting, Inc., a fine art foundry and fabrication shop in Philadelphia specializing in one-off castings from small scale to monument. Independent Casting was born out of Jeb S. Wood’s desire to offer artists a foundry that elevates the craft itself to a fine art. Wood began his career at Johnson Atelier, during which time he met many of the metalsmiths that would later join him as he created his own vision of what foundry can be. Today, Independent Casting’s work is shown around the world and boasts a client list containing some of the art world’s most elite — many of whom have been with him since the beginning. Mike Rossi is the principal of Rossi Metal Design based in Philadelphia and specializing in unique architectural works and sculpture.
