Royal Radio

Sekou

Q: What are your inspiration?

A: Having the feeling of not living up to my potential, and letting my talents go to waste.

Q: Who do you listen to? Who is hot right now?

A: It depends. I try to stay rooted in the independant scene. Alot of music goes unheard because the listers don't control the playlist, and the radio dj's don't control the playlist. So, now what you have is revenue driven radio, which some of it is ok, but there's some incredible independant artist that deserve the same, if not more spins than what's considered popular. So, to answer your question, I feel that WE as consumers, settle for the mundane. We accept that it's ok to glorify violence on wax, be promiscous on wax, exploit the degradation of male and female relationships on wax, and any other societal ills that we experience in life on wax. The more we let our moral guards down, the more "moral-less" the music becomes. When we demand more from our radio stations, I believe, the more balanced the playlist will become.

Q: Who is Sekou?

A: Sekou is a fan, emcee, historian, dj and student of music, and Hip Hop culture.

Q: How long have you been in the music business?

A: I started my company, Renaissance Music LLC back in 07. So, 7 years.

Q: What are your plans for Royal Radio?

A: To break the cycle of mediocrity that saturates today's airwaves, and give folks an alternative to the repetitivnes of mainstream radio.

Q: Who are your heroes?

A: Me, The prophet Muhammad, Isa (Jesus), Clarence 13X. Peace be upon them.
