overwhelmed . I entered into day long Facebook debates about gun laws , animal rights , parental failures , political foolishness and basketball groupies . It was then that I realized that my need to be connected and “ on top of things ” had gone terribly wrong .
According to my professional goals by this month I was supposed to have completed by branding project to include print , ads , website development , etc . in preparation for the big conference next week . Instead I allowed myself to become distracted and was stuck with creating a bunch of nothingness due to my distraction .
As business women , it is imperative that we keep our fingers on the pulse of the latest and greatest , however , it is even more important that we not allow the external noise distract us from our overall goals . The next time the world blows up around you I suggest the following to get back on track :
• Unplug . Focus inwardly and dust off your already developed list of goals ( monthly , quarterly , yearly ) and figure out where you are as opposed as where you projected that you would be at that point in time . The reality is that most of us were not hired to be Facebook politicians so we are actually not gaining anything professionally from engaging in day long debates about outside “ stuff ”.
• Phone-A-Mentor . Your mentor ( if you selected one properly ) will not allow you to waste his or her time with hour long discussions about animal rights or gun control . Although both are extremely important topics , neither , in most cases are directly tied to your business goals . I understand that we are all connected and that we all must gain knowledge in order to overcome many concerning trends in larger society . However , we as small business owners have products to create , projects to complete and goals to meet – today , next week and next month . Call your mentor . He or she should already know your larger vision and can effectively redirect you back to the topics of most importance to your business .
• Commit to one Action . Many of us are activists in our own way . Some of us march , while others write letters , and others raise money and promote awareness . Keep doing those things . Limit how much the internet and other news sources consume you by committing yourself to completing one action . I am just as outraged as you are about the recent events . Rather than debate on Facebook all day – write a letter or two or three to the appropriate Powers that Be and then let it go for a while . By committing to a specific action you have DONE something rather than debate about what someone ELSE should do . And then you can recommit to your business goals while knowing you have done your part .
