Ja maican-Can adian artist Sheryl Keen Acrylics Mixed M edia ABOUT THE ARTIST: Art is my secret hiding place, my refuge, and my window into the world. It is also the place where I can be me, the place where I can risk everything, and the medium through which I can give and show myself to the world. I do not set out to do a specific subject. I am influenced by things I see, feel and experience. However, I am particularly interested in faces/masks and how we use them to disguise our true feelings, sometimes successfully, other times unsuccessfully. I am also interested in exploring the strength of women and their ability to balance many things at once. It is my belief that art can change a space dramatically and in so doing, change the mood of the persons who use the space. Art can also change the way the world is viewed. On both counts, my intention is to help bring about these changes. I work mainly with acrylics and mixed media. This mix of the tradition with found objects gives the work additional texture and design, makes the finished product more interesting and connects traditional media to things from everyday life, thus making the artwork truly a “slice of life.” My work is meditative, contemplative and some say interpretive but always there is an internal search for meaning.
