Through my work, I reflect on a malleable identity shaped not only by our own shifting environments, but also by nature, nurture, inheritance, and history. I draw, print or paint on mylar, copper or paper to fluidly move with and investigate form an edge and to achieve a range of delicate, gestural lines and marks. I strive to communicate acceptance, ambivalence, struggle, empathy, Accidental Temptress and connectivity, and to convey the duality embedded Figurative Art/Feminist Art, 44 x 30” within our identity. Oil and Graphite on Paper, $800 “Am I Living Up to Your Expectations” is an on-going series of paintings, drawings, and prints created from documented performances depicting women bare-handedly devouring and destroying cake. What began as a symbolic smashing of the patriarchy ultimately revealed more by way of women’s relationships with our own selves and with each other. Depicted are normally polite, professional women acting out in a cathartic and animalistic manner. The work evolved into a multi-layered exploration of women’s relational capabilities. Images of cruelty, secrecy, and aggression are balanced with depictions of love, solidarity, and sincerity. Self-acceptance, the need for approval, and sexual undertones are embedded within the work.
