mortgage broker President Mirande Alexandre Can A Business Obtain Government Funding, Or Any Funding Assistance?! What is the difference between the Not-For-Profit and For -Profit Sectors? The Not-For-Profit Sector is sometimes referred to as civil society, the third sector, non-profit, not-for-profit, the voluntary, charity and social sector. The various terms are used by people to include different combinations of activities which can be confusing! The Not-For-Profit Sector delivers profit – value – to society through an extraordinary array of institutions, programs and services. It might surprise you to know that the Not-For-Profit Sector is huge in Alberta. There are over 11,500 not- for-profit organizations in Edmonton alone! Imagine the rest of the Province! “The not-for-profit sector is larger and more important to Canada than the oil and gas sector. There are over 170,000 charitable and non-profit organizations in Canada. 85,000 of these are registered charities (recognized by the Canada Revenue Agency). The charitable and non-profit sector contributes an average of 8.1% of total Canadian GDP, more than the retail trade industry and close to the value of the mining, oil and gas extraction industry. Two million Canadians are employed in the Charitable and Non- Profit Sector and over 13 million people volunteer for non-profits” (Imagine Canada, http://sectorsource.ca/research- and-impact/sector-impact) Knowing the above facts, is it true, or false, that the Private Sector (For-Profit Businesses) cannot obtain government funding or any funding for that matter and must become non- profit organizations to obtain government assistance? False! It depends on what type of business you are, ideas you have and what you need. Businesses can obtain government funding for their employees’ training purposes or to train people for employment then get them a job or hire them. They can get funding to assist Indigenous People, Multicultural, Refugees, etc. If you have a business, you could partner with a not- for- profit and share the profits! There are many ways for a business to obtain funding. It could be through Financing from Banks, Social Enterprise Fund, Private Donors, Federal Government, Provincial Government, Crowed Funding, Equity Funding and Personal Assets. Each method has its own process and rules, but ultimately, the secret in obtaining any funding or financial assistance is….Relationships…. and ……Writing! That is what we do and do well! President MIRANDE ALEXANDRE Connecting 360 Phone 780-263-1393 [email protected] 87 Lo The real value of the Not-For-Profit is in the worth it creates for society on daily basis: feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless and searching for better treatments. If profit is a measure of value created, then the reality is that most not-for-profits are immensely “profitable” from both a net revenue and impact perspective… Hence, you want to be associated with them!
